The Pacific (WW2) Question?

Sledge was sleeping and Snafu maybe felt there was nothing to be said. Merriell 'Snafu' Shelton didn't keep in touch with anyone from the war for almost forty years. He contacted E.B. Sledge after he read Sledge's memoir "With the Old Breed: at Peleliu and Okinawa" in 1981. He was probably just trying to walk away from the war and all memories associated with it. Despite his tough exterior, there were a lot of indications that the war did deeply disturb him, like how he warned Sledge not to take the gold teeth, because it's something you can't undo.
